This brief shot from a 16mm home movie shows the famous “Bulldog Cafe” in Los Angeles, which stood at 1153 West Washington Blvd. At the time the movie was shot the building was in use by the Great Western Development Co., a real estate firm. The dog’s famous pipe appears to have been removed.
The dog building was demolished sometime in the 1950s but a recreation was built for the Disney film “The Rocketeer”. That replica was later installed in the Peterson Automobile Museum and is now part of a local restaurant called the Idle Hour.
The building is an example of roadside vernacular architecture which was celebrated in Jim Heimann’s book “California Crazy”.
