19354c INDUSTRY ON PARADE MAXWELL HOUSE COFFEE FARE BOXES JELLO STANLEY HOME PRODUCTS

This black & white educational film is called ‘INDUSTRY ON PARADE.’ It is around the late 1940s/early 1950s (this is based on the last segment, research shows the concept car was 1951). It begins with the title and then states it is produced each week by the National Association of Manufacturers (:06-:28). Title that shows Open House followed by the General Food Corp in San Leandro, CA, (this is where the narrator begins) groundskeepers tend to grass and flowers, man cleans windows, lights and top of the building, floor is vacuumed and machines are waxed, entrance sign placed, exterior shot of building, people approach and enter the building, the Plant Manager welcomes people, passes out flyers (:29-1:28) Shots of coffee in bags, coffee goes into the hopper, shots that show/explain the mixing/blending of it, visitors and the roaster man, closeups of all facets of making the coffee (roaster, cooling pan, etc.)

(1:29-2:36). Coffee fills the cans, visitors watch the coffee cans, closeups on the coffee, the line of coffee cans goes by, people get in close and look at the coffee

(2:37-3:08). Homer, the coffee taster, shots of him tasting, people watching(3:09-3:27). Gov. Warren visits (3:27-3:30). Women and machines show how Jello products are made, packaging of jello & machine parts make it, jello going into its boxes down the line, people watch machines, the narrator explains how good this plant is, people wander the facility, free samples, younger visitors visit (3:31-4:32).

Title card of ‘A Message from Industry to You,’ newspapers being set up by a machine, people attend a meeting, shots of men creating a machine while the narrator explains how much it costs to create a job and invest, a shareholders meeting takes place, men and women hold a microphone and state their concerns (4:33-5:12). Title card: ‘Fares Please!’ – street railway footage, people entering buses, paying fares, subway token machines, people buy tokens, The Johnson Fare Box Company exterior shots followed by people making the fare box machines, close ups on the boxes being designed, machines put the boxes together, people make the fare boxes, intricate design is shown for the fare boxes, detailed shots of the mechanism being tested then finally done (5:13-7:11). A woman puts the belt type money changer together, shots of her hammering it, moving it, followed by the coin wrapper machine, many shots of this machine at work, coins go up an elevator to be placed into a hopper before being dispersed to their appropriate coin wrapper, out drops the filled coin wrappers, coin wrappers filled are placed into bags, various machines that deal with coins are shown

(7:12-8:33). Title card states ‘Mop-Up!’ – Frank Stanley Beveridge at home in Westfield, MA, the founder of Stanley Home Products, shots of mops being made, yarn is cut, how a mop is made, a complete way to manufacturing a mop, how the mop plus its handle are shown, the president of the company is shown as she started by selling mops door to door (8:34-10:39). Title card of ‘A Message from Industry to You,’ woman makes soup, shot of the capitol, farm shots, people at the bank, narrator explains inflation (10:39-11:19) Title card: ‘The Car of Tomorrow,’ – General Motors experimental Le Sabre shown driving and then being worked on, closeups of the engine, interior shots, all kinds of shots of this car, the lights, exhaust, etc., the built in jack is shown in progress, the convertible roof is tested and shown operating, the narrator explains all about the car, its horsepower, and its weight, the car is seen on a track going fast (11:20-13:24). End title card shows National Association of Manufacturers followed by The End (13:24-13:33).
