This film was created for sales personnel of Chevrolet (:04) and it is comprised of two different segments, the first about the 1971 Nova and the second about the 1971 Vega. The Nova was manufactured from 1962-79 and 1985-88 model years. It begins with a re-enactment of a survey commissioned by Nationwide Consumers Testing Institute of owners and operators of independent garage and service facilities as to which car required the least amount of service (:50). An actress named Gail Kennedy goes from service station to service station to question mechanics about this and they each reply with the Nova (1:26). The film turns to Chevrolet engineers performing a tear down test on all the vehicles parts after it had been driven for miles over varying terrains (2:18). Tests are conducted on the door (2:38), windshield wipers (2:51), seat upholstery (3:00) and on the gas tank (3:06). A comparison of the Nova’s interior features to the competitor’s interior features follows pointing to the concealed antenna (4:36), roll down rear windows (4:45), the counter balanced hood (4:55), foot operated parking brake (5:16) and the steel cargo guard in the trunk of Nova’s (6:18). The Nova was also equipped with protective inner fenders (7:29) and the hood is removed to give viewers a closer look (7:34). The 1971 Rally Nova is looked at next (7:47) and included features like rally type wheels and special front and rear suspension which gave it a high resale value (8:05). This segment concludes and was produced by Bill Sandy Company Inc. (8:42). The Vega is a subcompact automobile that was manufactured during 1970-77. This vehicle’s segment begins at (9:10). It opens with a diagram pointing to how the overall dimensions for it was decided based on the space requirements for four passengers (9:50). It took ten years of design and development to produce the Vega engine which is a 142 cubic inch 4 cylinder with an aluminum alloy block (10:21). Automated welding equipment is shown in use (10:36) for the body panel assembly. The completed frame is then dunked into anti-corrosive primer (10:49). Some of the Vega’s features follow including the front bucket seats (11:12), large coil springs at each wheel (11:17), front disk brakes (11:23) and the double paneled steel roof (11:36). An image of ‘Motor Trend’ appears with the cover reading the 71 Car of the Year was the Chevrolet Vega (11:50). Also pointed to is a reader survey in ‘Car and Driver’ which awarded the Vega the best economy sedan (11:57). Dan Gurney; well known racing driver of the 1960’s, is seen test driving the Vega (12:19). A series of driving demonstrations of incidents that could happen on the road way follow (13:26). Exterior features include the cargo guard barrier (15:18), high impact ABS plastic valence panels (15:28), and under the engine, a steel brace which protected the oil pan (15:45). Chevrolet’s Vega Kammback Wagon was the first domestic wagon on the little car market (16:35). Another model shown is the Vega Hatchback Coupe (16:46). The film concludes with a montage of the models looked at (17:37).
