18754 CULTIVATION, HARVESTING AND PROCESSING OF COFFEE & SUGAR 1940s EDUCATIONAL FILM (SILENT FILM)

This black & white silent educational film is about coffee and sugar production in the Torrid Zone, the hot central belt of the earth bounded by the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. It shows a copyrighted date of 1940-1942 (both dates are shown).

Opening title: Coffee & Sugar. Title card: Coffee. NOTE: This silent educational film has title cards that give some explanation to what is shown (:10-:26). Tropical trees. Grass and trees. Workers chop at the trees. A hand holds berries, the coffee bean is the seed of red berries. Workers carry bags and walk. Men stand around. Berries dumped from buckets into water. Berries in the water (:27-2:16). Workers spread the berries out in the sun. Workers drag hoes along the ground. Workers shovel berries. A cylindrical giant machine rotates. A child worker picks through the berries (2:17-3:22). Title card: Sugar. Tropical trees and land. Men, near water, pick through sugar cane. Men hack through high weeds/brush. Machete some sugar cane. Animals graze. Mules march onward carrying a wagon. Bales of the sugar cane are lowered and taken into a wagon type vehicle. Men put the cane into a machine and it is crushed. A machine shows the cane being crushed into liquid. A man pulls at a cloth filter machine. The cane is boiled, some poured into pans. Workers observe (3:23-6:15). Cane has crystalized when cold. A machine moves. Mules and oxen haul their goods in wagons (6:16-7:00). End credits (7:01-7:02).
