At 4:08 a horse pulls a plow through the field and then the field is seeded and irrigated. At 4:50 a group of agricultural workers — possibly Mexican American — are shown harvesting artichokes in California. At 5:40 celery is shown. At 6:03 a steam locomotive pulls freight cars on the railroad to deliver vegetables to market. At 6:20 a wholesale market is shown where fruits and vegetables are sold.

Truck farming is the horticultural practice of growing one or more vegetable crops on a large scale for shipment to distant markets. It is usually less intensive and diversified than market gardening. At first this type of farming depended entirely on local or regional markets. Truck farming began after the Civil War as cities grew and the spread of railroads made transport faster and more efficient. In 1868 William Geraty and Frank Towles began farming on Yonges and Wadmalaw Islands, where the soil and long growing season were ideal for truck crops.
