Dating to the mid-1940s before Israeli statehood, this educational film “Palestine” begins with a sweeping view of the fabled hills of Judea. Newsreel footage is taken from various times in history. Jerusalem, the capital of Palestine and sacred to three of the world’s great religions. Men kneel in prayer, facing Mecca 1:06. Young Christians visit Jerusalem 1:15. The solemn walk of the crucifix to Calvary 1:18. A great Christian shrine has been erected; believed to be the place where Jesus began his life 1:35. The Hebrews visit Jerusalem and worship at the Wailing Wall 1:52. Jews bow in reverence and prayer in front of the Wailing Wall 2:08 The Torah is presented to congregants as men, dressed in traditional garb, reverently pray 2:25. The shining city of Tel Aviv 2:30. Architecture of Tel Aviv is shown 2:45. 1917. Not until the First World War, when the British ended four centuries of Turkish rule, was Palestine established as a refuge for the oppressed 3:05. 1917. After the British conquered the holy land in 1917, the Jews were promised a national home in Palestine by Britain’s Earl of Balfour. Woodrow Wilson endorsed this policy and is shown 3:20. London issues a white paper: Palestine: Statement of Policy 3:54. “After the period of five years no further Jewish immigration will be permitted unless the Arabs of Palestine are prepared to acquiesce in it.” 4:00. By the war’s end, hundreds of thousands of survivors face the future without hope. Jews from all over Europe seek refuge in Palestine. Hungry and destitute, they share food and clothing 4:28. The Daniel Sieff Research Institute, a public research university in Rehovot, Israel, established in 1934 and now known as Weizmann Institute of Science 7:30. Dr Weizmann and his sister Anna were leading scientists of the day 7:40. Young rabbinical students 7:55. Hebrew universities spark the minds of many scholars A: 20. Young girls work at physical fitness 8:38. Hadassah Hospital trains many nurses 8:43. Jews acquire skills in agricultural schools 9:10. Cooperative settlements house the farmers 9:30. Committees assign work and chores to a community of willing, hardworking Jews 9:55. Men and women work in the fields 10:16. Individual farms also flourish 10:45. Water is dammed up during the rainy season to be used for agriculture in dry times 11:05. Farmers irrigate their crops and manage the land 11:20. A map of the day shows Palestine’s population hotspots on the Mediterranean Sea north of Egypt 11:30. Isolated desert campers look for water 11:48. Many wells for water are drilled 12:00. Farmers till the land with horses 12:14. Planning and work continues to support thousands of new settlers 12:30. Disease research and malaria stations are established to further study the deadly disease 12:36. Jews and Arabs alike are treated at these research centers 13:00. A camel carries a heavy load 13:10. In 1922 the Jewish population is rising but Arabs highly outnumber them 13:15. From 1939 to 1945 the Jewish population increased only incrementally as compared to the Arabs 13:21. Arabs prosper and become wealthy while Jewish populations toil 14:05. The Arab Army marches and is backed up by the League of Arab States / Arab League to keep Palestine Arab 14:33. Government officials debate the populations of Palestine 15:05. in WWII, Jewish soldiers helped fight the war to free the world of fascism 15:53. Jewish immigrants exit the train and enter Palestine to pursue happiness as free men and women in Palestine 16:20. The End.
