The National Aeronautics and Space Administration presents, a 1960’s era, color movie called, The World Was There. Produced by Byron Morgan with Les Gaver as Technical Advisor, the film was edited by George Merriken. Written by Byron Morgan and Gene Starbecker. Directed by Gene Starbecker. People gather outside the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, 1:18. A rocket on the launching pad is shown, 2:16. Men in the darkroom are developing photos, 2:25. Press conference in 1959, 20:42. Men being rescued from a space capsule at sea, 3:05. Freedom 7 takes off from the launch pad, with astronaut, Alan Shepard aboard, 3:44. Magazine pages flip showing scenes from the Freedom 7 mission. Rocket launch, Malcolm Scott Carpenter was an American naval officer and aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, astronaut, and aquanaut. He was one of the Mercury Seven astronauts selected for NASA’s Project Mercury in April 1959. Carpenter was the second American (after John Glenn) to orbit the Earth and the fourth American in space, after Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, and Glenn. John Herschel Glenn Jr. (July 18, 1921 – December 8, 2016) was a United States Marine Corps aviator, engineer, astronaut, businessman, and politician. He was the first American to orbit the Earth, circling it three times in 1962. Scott Carpenter is airlifted from the sea upon his return, 12:28. Scott Carpenter reunites with his family at Cape Canaveral. The Atlas rocket is stationed at Cape Canaveral, 13:08. The 5th Atlas Mission is launched, 13:28. News reporters witness the launch, 13:45.
