17314 1928 TRAVELOGUE & REAL ESTATE PROMO FILM ” PROGRESS IN LOS ANGELES ” (SILENT FILM) HOLLYWOOD

Made in 1928 to promote the ARO Real Estate company and especially its development in Sunset Park, “Progress in Los Angeles” showcases the city and its environs. At 1:00 the corner of Sixth and Flower Street is shown, and the site of the new Edison Building at 1:29. At 1:36 Wilshire Blvd. is shown and the “exclusive” residential areas. At 1:48 a map shows a lot of farmland in between Hollywood, Los Angeles, Whittier, San Bernardino, Pasadena and Glendale. More views along Wilshire Blvd. follow the 2:00 mark. At 2:16 the change from 1920 to 1928 is shown with a lot of traffic and at 2:36 the Bullock’s Department Store. At 3:00 is an ARO owned property, a mixed use building with a drugstore. “Property values have advanced from $200 per foot to approximately $1000 in five years” proclaims a title card. Large residential buildings are shown at 3:36. At 3:55 the Ambassador Hotel is shown from the air and at 4:40 from north of Wilshire. At 5:03 another ARO owned property is shown with a trolley car whizzing by. At 5:25 Beverly Boulevard is shown with the Western Auto Supply building. At 6:40 more ARO properties are shown. At 7:00 the film switches focus to Hollywood. At 7:18 Hollywood and Vine is shown as a grove of trees and at 7:34 in its 1928 configuration. At 8:00 the skyline of Hollywood Blvd. is seen including the Vine Street Theater. At 8:45 the UCLA campus is shown and at 9:02 the Village of Westwood. At 9:26 the film looks at Santa Monica and the Bay District “California’s Riviera.” At 10:33 an aerial of the Pacific Coast Highway or PCH shows the beach. At 10:57 the growth of the city is shown towards the west towards Santa Monica through Culver City. At 11:21 the industrial area of Vernon is shown, along with an ARO property. At 12:00 a Los Angeles Railway trolley car trundles past Vernon and Hoover near Exposition Park. At 12:24 the Coliseum is seen with a title card proclaiming that the Olympics will soon be hosted at the venue. At 13:10 expansion of the city to the south is traced on a map towards Long Beach and San Pedro. At 13:40 the man-made harbor is shown. At 13:54 Redondo Beach is mentioned and at 14:06 Inglewood is shown on the map. At 14:12 the corner of Hyde Park Blvd. is shown with a Stoner’s Pharmacy. At 14:30 Sunset Park is shown, home to an ARO sub-division. This area, the film indicates, is ideal for new homes. At 14:54 a street sign advertising the Sunset Park development is shown and some of the model homes at 15:13. Modern amenities include gas, city water and sewer and electricity and Spanish touches abound in the home styling.
