17284 ANTI-VIETNAM WAR PROTESTS BERKELEY CALIFORNIA, CHICAGO ILLINOIS POLICE RESPONSE

This silent news footage shows some of the protests against the Vietnam War in the late 1960s. The film contains a montage of various universities where protests have been going including the University of California, Berkeley at :52 and University of Wisconsin at 2:23. At 4:06 San Francisco Police Dept. officers arrest hippie protestors. At 5:30 footage from U.C. Berkeley shot on May 21, 1969 includes a newspaper headline from the Daily Californian that reads “Helicopters Gas UC Campus.” This refers to an incident from the day before when a National Guard helicopter overflew the Berkeley campus spraying tear gas on demonstrators in Sproul Plaza. Several thousand people had appeared on campus at for a memorial honoring James Rector, the student who had been killed in the initial riot The National Guard had been ordered by Governor Ronald Reagan to break up the campus gathering sparked by controversy over People’s Park.At 6:04 faculty bear witness to the death of Rector. At 6:25 the University House is shown with a contingent of armed National Guard on the steps. At 6:47 a student confronts National Guard soldiers.

At 7:54, footage from Chicago of protestors with “Bring Them Home” signs. This group was marching towards DuSable Plaza / DuSable Park as part of the build-up to the Democratic National Convention. At 8:36 counter protestors are visible across the street. They are seen again at 10:00, including a protestor at 10:28 carrying a Ronald Reagan sign. At 11:24 protestors are arrested by the Chicago Police Department.
