16554 BUILDING A SKYSCRAPER 1970s CONSTRUCTION CAREER GUIDANCE FILM

This 1973 educational film from Charles Cahill & Associates gives viewers a look at the different careers that are used to build a skyscraper while showing various construction stages of a skyscraper. The film opens with footage of a city and shots of various skyscrapers including the TransAmerica Pyramid in San Francisco. Men work at a construction site laying the foundation for a skyscraper (01:11). Several workers tie rebar while others drive bulldozers and operate other heavy machines. Architects work on plans for a building (01:52). Men pour cement for the foundation. A crane moves steel support beams (02:27), and workers guide the beams into place. A man welds metal (03:23). A temporary elevator carries workers between the higher floors of the building and ground level (04:04). A man walks on a steel beam and places brackets on it (04:50). Carpenters cut sheets of plywood, which are then placed over the steel beams. Men lay rebar over the plywood (05:50), and then they tie the rebar. Cement is pumped up to the floor where it is poured over the plywood and rebar. Cement workers smooth and finish the cement. There is a good shot of the building about midway through its construction (07:27). The film shows a number of other men working specific jobs necessary for building skyscrapers: pipe fitters move pipes into place; a plumber works on the plumbing; a man sprays fireproofing material over the structure; finishers skin-plate the surface of the steel structures; and glass workers install glass window panes (09:08). An elevator installer connects wires inside the control panel. The film shows the ground level of the construction site and some of the power tools used there, including a circular saw. The film concludes with shots of several different skyscrapers.
