Produced in 1966, “Deccan Village” is a documentary that describes the way Indians navigate their daily lives around their basic needs with a focus on agricultural production in this area. This film was written and photographed by Tony Morrison B.Sc. F.R.G.S. and edited by Walter Storey. It is narrated by Nan Winton and originally released by Rank Educational Films. Deccan in Sanskrit means “south” and the area discussed in the film is the southern region of the Indian Subcontinent. There has been much research done on the role of government officials in this region and this film contains rich footage of the Indian rituals.

Women making chapati/bread and other types of food (5:21). Men carrying goods with oxcarts (5:36) and others carrying them on baskets and loading up horses and ponies (5:45). Men and women carrying goods on foot (5:54). The market with crowds of people sitting in circles exchanging gossip and money (6:12). A man weighing the goods he trades with different weights on the scale (6:42). A snake charmer with two snakes entertaining the crowd (6:58). A man making a pot with the traditional pottery wheel that is made of human hair and cow dung (7:07). Images of welding procedures at a local factory that creates agricultural equipment such as wheels, cogs, water pumps etc. (7:20). Suited man walking around a classroom and young boys writing (7:50). Sanskrit written on a blackboard (8:03). Adult men and women writing Sanskrit in smaller blackboards (8:05). Young girl giving lesson to the older women sitting on the ground and taking notes (8:22). A man singing and playing tambura and another playing the drums (8:36). A young girl dancing (probably kathak) to the singing musicians (8:52).
