14714 WINDJAMMER CRUISE ALONG COASTAL MAINE 1960s DOCUMENTARY FILM “ACROSS THE SEVEN SEAS”

In this episode of Jack Douglas’ travel series The Fabulous Fifty, viewers are taken on a cruise along part of coastal Maine. The episode shows the Windjammer off the coast of Maine (00:47), then cuts to Milt and Judy Farney, who talk about their cruise and making the episode. Footage shows a car drive into Camden, Maine, the harbor and the town. A lazy boat, owned by the captain of the Windjammer, moves through the Everglades. People climb aboard the Windjammer Mattie, and the ship is pushed out to sea. Captain Fred Morrey is interviewed by Farney about the captain’s career, including interesting trips such as going around the world and up the Amazon. People hoist the sails of the ship (04:55). The Mattie is shown on the water with sails full. Captain and owner Jim Nesbit shows Judy Farney how to tie knots into a rope (05:35). People relax on the ship, and some of the cruise passengers introduce themselves to the camera. The ship sails along the coast (07:22). Judy Farney meets with the cook, who is prepping for a chowder. Guests eat a meal on the ship (09:04). People make homemade ice cream on deck. Judy Farney rests on her bunk with a book. The ship stops at Castine (09:58), at the mouth of the Penobscot River. They visit the remains of Fort George and see a massive canon. The Mattie approaches Deer Isle Bridge, connecting Deer Isle to the mainland (10:41). Guests “swab” the deck. A sea plane approaches the ship at Northeast Harbor. The pilot takes Farney up in the air, and the film shows aerial views of Somes Sound. Guests swim off the boat as it anchors in the sound. Captain Jim Nisbet radios the sister ship Mercantile (12:43). Guests play guitars, accordions, and sing during the evening. Fireworks explode in the sky (13:56). Next, the episode takes viewers to Stonington, ME (14:37), where the passengers motor to shore and dig for clams. The Farneys visit a lobster fishing operation and look at lobster fishing traps stacked on a dock (15:33). A lobster fisherman explains how lobster traps work. Judy Farney holds a pot buoy. The couple go out on a boat with the fisherman to pull traps. He pulls in a trap and takes out the lobsters (18:09). Later, the guests on the ship eat lobster for dinner. Seagulls follow the ship as it sails for its next destination. Viewers see Owls Head lighthouse (19:08), and footage shows the Farneys touring the lighthouse and observing the lamp. The couple then have coffee with the Coast Guard lightkeeper and his family, who talk about life as lightkeepers. The lightkeeper lights up the lighthouse once the sun sets (21:47). Farney is hoisted up the mast on a swing. As a storm approaches, the passengers go below deck. At Canon Harbor (23:04), the Mattie makes a call to port, concluding the cruise. The couple wave goodbye to the captain. Milt and Judy say goodbye to the camera (24:02), and Jack Douglas thanks them for their work on the show.
