14574 “THE CASE OF THE MISSING MAGNETS” 1960s INDUSTRIAL MANAGEMENT TRAINING FILM

This color educational/training film is about how to be a better supervisor and praise your workers while boosting productivity. This was made in 1960. Framed like a private eye film, watch as Grady, a plant supervisor, learns how to motivate employees by building morale.

Opening titles: Modern Management Films – The Case of the Missing Magnets. A man named Grady, a supervisor, smokes a cigarette (:08-:44). Grady walks through a factory that makes magnets. He goes into his office, removes his jacket and hat and goes over to his desk and sits as he reads his weekly production report , the phone rings and he answers it, its his secretary. He exits his office and goes onto the factory floor and looks at a machine (:45-3:09). Grady goes into his office and talks with another man who’s fixing his telephone. He moves his phone around and makes the cord longer. The two men continue to talk until the phone man leaves (3:10-5:31). Close on some machines and Grady has a flashback to when he operated the machines with other workers. A foreman talks with Grady and is angry about productivity. Grady hangs out with coworkers inside the factory and operates a machine (5:32-6:54). The foreman scolds his workers, among them Grady. The men stare and look sullen. The foreman yells. Grady smokes and other workers don’t care about the situation. A new foreman is on the scene. He has a different attitude and praises his workers, Grady takes notice, the others act more upbeat (6:55-8:43). The new foreman talks with other men and they look at magnets, which is what they make. Close up on the blueprints of a new machine (8:44-9:39). Grady is back in the present. He looks out at the machines. Grady returns to his office and types. Close on three words and their definitions: enthusiasm, pride, and standards. Grady is happy and rolls down his sleeves, walks over to his jacket and happily leaves (9:40-11:37). End credits (11:37-11:48).
