10684a SAUCE FOR THE GANDER 1940 HOTPOINT APPLIANCE SALES FILM w/ ALAN LADD (REEL 2)

REEL 1: https://youtu.be/ANNv-ilJ3Q0

Made by the Hotpoint appliance company to promote their electric appliances, “Sauce for the Gander” is a 1940 comedy starring Damien O’Flynn, Joan Woodbury and a

very young Alan Ladd in an un-credited role. (This may very well be Ladd’s earliest big screen appearance.)

The plot of this film revolves around Tom Tupper (Damian O’Flynn) who is stopped by a ‘man on the spot’ reporter (Alan Ladd) during his daily commute. Asked for his opinion on male/female relations, Tom tells the radio audience that he thinks men could do a better job running the household than women. When he arrives home, his infuriated wife Margaret (Joan Woodbury) proposes that her husband put his money where his mouth is. The couple switch roles, with Margaret going to the office and Tom cooking and cleaning. While Margaret becomes a successful entrepreneur, Tom is a complete failure and comes close to having a nervous breakdown. Tom eventually begs Margaret to go back to the way things were, but his now-independent wife isn’t interested.

The film was directed by Jean Yarbrough, a Hollywood veteran who had a long career. His biggest successes were in directing comedy teams like Abbott and Costello, The Bowery Boys, and horror/cult movies that are still fondly remembered to this day, such as The Devil Bat, King of the Zombies, She-Wolf of London, and House of Horrors.

The rest of the cast includes: Evalyn Knapp (Secretary), Henry Roquemore (Mr. Twitchell),

Irving Mitchell (Mr. Bentley), Nella Walker (Mrs. Bentley), Claudia Dell (Mrs. Rogers), Vivien Oakland (Mrs. Morton) and Cobina Wright (Mrs. Horton).
