10624 1960 “CONQUEST” TV SHOW PSYCHOLOGICAL ANIMAL RESEARCH EXPERIMENT w/ MONKEYS ABOUT LOVE

This black & white educational film “Mother Love” is about animal research about love. This is a 1960 CBS News presentation.

A baby monkey lays about (:06-:22). Title card: Conquest (:23-:34). Charles Collingwood introduces us to this film about science. This about the measure of love (:35-1:17). Primate laboratory at The University of Wisconsin at Madison as our host holds a baby Rhesus Monkey. 120 of these monkeys are in the lab. They are trying to measure an infants love for his mother. They are very similar to human babies (1:18-3:50). They are going to do a test with 2 different kinds of mothers, one is a wire mother, the other is cloth mother. Both have bottles. The first monkey goes to the cloth monkey. When you remove the bottle, the monkey will bounce between the two due to comfort and food and comfort vs food (3:51-8:01). The monkey will be introduced to a diabolical looking apparatus. When he is scared he runs to the cloth mother and after hugging her for a moment, he becomes less fearful and he yells at the apparatus (8:02-9:44). They place the monkey into a strange room without his mother. They then add a wire mother, the monkey still avoids the wire. When a cloth mother is added, the monkey goes right to her. He will then investigate if his cloth mother is around. They continue and add a cloth mother to a room with a strange looking creature. The monkey rushes to the cloth mother (9:45-13:31). They set up a barricade but the monkey springboards himself to the cloth mother. Security emboldens the monkey (13:32-15:15). Older monkeys who haven’t seen their mothers (they were raised by both) in 6 months are going to be reunited with their mothers, will they remember? The monkey went straight for his cloth mother as opposed to his wire mother. Monkeys want to be reunited with their cloth mothers, even after 6 months (15:16-16:56). 8 months without a mother, an older monkey is given both mothers and they prefer the cloth mother. However if a monkey who never had a mother is given a mother, many months later, he doesn’t pay her much mind (16:57-18:54). A fear stimulus is given and 2 monkeys will be tested based on prior living. The options are a cloth mother or flight. The first monkey rushes to his cloth mother. The second, deprived, was only interested in escape. If a human infant hasn’t learned to love by 3 months to age 1, he may never learn to love at all (18:55-20:57). Monkeys learn to be friends. When given a choice of friend or cloth mother, he goes to cloth mother first and then visits friend. However, in the face of fear, the mother is always first choice. But monkeys are like humans in that they will slowly break away from their mother (20:58-23:07). We can try and study love but we still don’t know what it is (23:08-23:34). Charles Collingwood wraps up what we’ve learned (23:35-24:15). Conquest end titles (24:16-25:26).
