10364 ARMED FORCES SCREEN REPORT #114 1950s WEAPONS & TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

This black & white educational/propaganda film is about the research and development in new technology for making the USA safer against enemy aggressors. There is no copyright at the beginning or end of the film so the date of the production remains unclear but it is the late 1940s as World War 2 has passed.

Opening titles: Armed Forces Screen Report Issue Number 114 (:08-:27). Title: Research and development (:28-:35). Missiles fire, ships sail, our narrator gives information on WW2. The atomic bomb, radar, guided missiles like the V-2 were all great experiments that came to fruition. Newspaper headlines show war is everywhere and we as a nation want to make sure peace can occur. We are building a strong military and by doing experiments to insure an unapproachable security for the USA (:36-2:42). Research continues. Einstein’s theory of relativity lead to the creation of the atom bomb. Planes are shown being worked on. We seek technological supremacy. Global warfare is always a possibility and we must be ready to fight in all climates on all terrain. If countries know we can do this then they will not be aggressors. Soldiers are shown in different parts of the world. Battleships fire, submarines are shown equipped with snorkels, and mine-layer aircraft are shown. Guided missiles are shown being fired as are torpedoes (2:43-5:15). Submarines help in warfare underwater. All kinds of bombs are shown being ford and dropped. Tank guns are fired. At 6:53 the General Patton tank is shown. Tanks are being built lighter for better maneuverability. The smaller and lighter are being made for tanks and boats

(5:16-7:37). Army and Navy are making assault boats together and at 8:02 a walking barge. Making boats or crafts that can be low in water and sand are being worked on. A better walkie talkie is being given a new look and more comfortable to carry (7:38-9:39). Aerial vehicles are being made to be faster and stay up in the air longer. B-29s are shown. Long distance bombers fly. FX-85 is a new invention. B-36s are featured (9:40-11:32). Our new planes drop goods via parachutes. New planes don’t need runways. Planes are the freighters of the sky. Amphibious planes (11:33-13:07). A Kellett XR-10 / XH-10 helicopter is shown. It was designed in response to a USAAF Technical Instruction issued for the development of a helicopter to transport passengers, cargo, or wounded personnel within an enclosed fuselage. Troops enter planes. Light tanks can be shuttled by air in flying boxcars. Troops land in the Arctic and then march. Snow and cold weather clothing is shown. Going through the snow is shown and clothing tested (13:08-15:48). Arctic c-rations are shown being tested. Creating fuel that last in subzero cold is also a concern (15:49-17:24). Rust prevention needs to be improved to maintain equipment. Cars stuck in snow. Tests and experiments on men to ward off disease. Science has created Sulfa, penicillin, chloromycetin already. Tests are being done on animals to study atomic blasts including at the Bikini island tests (17:25-19:45). Tests and research lead to technological superiority to ward off aggressors. Don’t be complacent, eternal vigilance is needed. Land, air, and sea must be where we lead (19:46-21:04). End credits (21:05-21:17)
