In this early 1960s episode of Biography, hosted by Mike Wallace, viewers are treated to a look at the brief reign of King Edward VIII, who abdicated and became the Duke of Windsor. Mike Wallace introduces the episode about the Duke of Windsor (00:58). The film shows a shot of the crown of the King of England, then the Duke as he rides a horse and walks with advisors (01:40). Footage shows the 6-year-old Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David playing what appears to be “cowboys” with two other children, dressed in a southwest American/Mexican cowboy costume. His great-grandmother Queen Victoria waves to a crowd (02:35). She is succeeded by her son, King Edward VII, who leisurely walks the grounds of his estate, rides a horse, and hunts for birds. The episode shows viewers his funeral procession in 1910 (03:20). His son George V becomes king; King George V walks aboard a British ship. At Caernarfon Castle, a young Edward David takes part in his investiture ceremony, where he is crowned the Prince of Wales (04:04). David participates in a variety of national duties, including a flag ceremony and military training. Footage shows tanks and artillery during World War I, but David is kept from the fighting. The Prince of Wales observes tanks, planes taking off, and the surrender of Germany’s Navy aboard the USS New York. David boards a royal Navy Cruiser to visit the various countries in the British dominion (05:47). The eligible bachelor waves to cheering crowds as he visits India and other holdings in the British Empire. Women in Canada welcome David with some sort of performance. The Prince of Wales attends a rodeo during is travels (06:50). He also visits President Woodrow Wilson at the Whitehouse (07:00), meets with American veterans of World War I, and is celebrated in New York City with a ticker-tape parade (07:35). He is shown around West Point by General Douglas MacArthur. The episode then shows two women sitting on a garden bench talking about the prince (08:42). This is followed by a shot of a naval cruiser (09:06) and David meeting with people as he continues to tour the world. He makes an appearance at official events back home in the British isles (09:59). David golfs and races thoroughbred horses. He visits an airshow (10:38) and is fascinated by the flying daredevils. David climbs into a plane to take flying lessons (11:02); he is the first royal prince to fly. David goes out on a fox hunt (11:40), and later befriends Ernest Simpson and wife Wallis Warfield Simpson, an American. The episode features some shots of nightlife in Mayfair, London, where David enjoys dancing and going out. An aerial view shows Belvedere Castle (12:20), followed by images of Wallis Simpson. David and Wallis watch a horse race and go skiing (13:07). The episode then shows the funeral procession for King George V (13:20); the late king’s coffin is carried on a wagon. The episode then shows footage of the proclamation of David’s accession (13:52), as he becomes King Edward VIII (not to be confused with his upcoming coronation). The episode then cuts to the new king’s Mediterranean vacation with Wallis Simpson aboard the royal yacht Nahlin (15:05). The two swim in the Mediterranean’s waters. Back in England, David walks with advisors. Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin speaks against David’s potential marriage to Wallis. There are shots of royal and political figures involved in the crisis (Winston Churchill, Archbishop of Canterbury William Cosmo Gordon Lang, David’s brother Prince Albert, Duke of York, and, lastly, Queen Mary). Wallace Simpson climbs into a car, trying to avoid the paparazzi. David visits a struggling part of the country that is home to miners. Footage shows Brits reading newspapers dominated with headlines about David’s relationship with Wallis. Reporters hound Wallis despite her attempts to avoid the spotlight (18:50). Baldwin and other MKs meet at 10 Downing Street (19:20). The episode then shows various people, civilians and politicians, giving their thoughts about the issue of David wanting to marry Wallis (19:40). People march in the streets in support of their king (21:10). David walks with Queen Mary (21:53). Stanley announces the king’s abdication to parliament. The Duke of Windsor broadcasts his decision to abdicate (22:25); footage shows families, officers, and various groups of people gathered around radios to listen to the broadcast. The Duke and Wallis walk out of a villa in France having just married (23:44). The episode ends with more footage of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor together.
