XD52214 “ THE CORRECTIONAL OFFICER ” 1970’S PRISON STAFF DIET & EXERCISE TRAINING FILM

This film from the late 1970s depicts the Correctional Officer; the uniformed criminal justice official responsible for the custody and regulation of prisoners. The brief film notes the need for the officers to remain in decent physical shape for their employment. It is presented by Charles Cahill & Associates (:24). Correctional Officers conduct physical training exercises on the pavement (:46). A man jogs along a beach ideal for building resistance (1:12). A young woman plays tennis in court (1:12). A California Corrections Officer then appears stereotypically scarfing down a donut (1:29). A female officer sits down with an oversized meal (1:39). A typical American family nestles around the dinner table with oversized plates (1:45). Another man smokes tobacco, snacks on unhealthy foods and watches television; all of which are hazardous to a person’s overall health (1:50). Many Americans also sit most of their days for work (1:51). A corrections officer moves down a long line of cells (2:22). These unhealthy habits can lead to health restrictions and early death even (2:52). A young and fit woman jogs down the beach (2:55). The film turns inwards to human anatomy noting how the circulatory systems operates (3:19) and how arteries tend to clog due to poor health (3:30). A heart attack patient is rolled into an ambulance on a stretcher (3:42). The heart tends to weaken with lack of use (4:00). A gymnast practices her routine on a beam here (5:12). Swimming is a valuable source of exercise (5:14). Another woman tears through sit ups at the gym; a habit most may not have to personal determination for (5:26). The film notes that the physical aspect of the job often happens in quick moments (5:41) therefore the heart must be fit enough to respond quickly. Officers move in to break up a fight between inmates (5:54). Those who exercise tend to experience less stress (6:38). A woman is filmed walking down the side walk which is considered to be good enough exercise for those without much time (7:19). One officer parks his vehicle far from the entrance forcing himself to walk into work (8:53). A female officer pauses at work to conduct simple isometric exercises at work (9:19). The film begins to wrap up with summary of the methods of maintaining personal health as well as awareness on the job (10:43). A number of institutions involved in the feature include the California prison in Chino (10:46); California State Prison in San Quentin and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (10:52).
