88704 1949 CHEVROLET AUTOMOBILES PROMOTIONAL FILM “IT ALL DEPENDS”

The 1949 short Chevrolet film, “It All Depends,” produced by Jam Handy, promotes Chevrolet vehicles by showing how the American community is connected and works together, and the role the automobile manufacturer plays. The film was shot somewhere in Michigan, likely just outside Detroit. It opens with an aerial view of a town, then cuts to a scene of children playing on a street (00:33). A family eats a meal together (01:54), the little boy enjoying a glass of milk that is brought to him by Jersey Creamery Company’s milkman (02:35; 08:10). The narrator discusses the chain of relationships that brings the milk to the little boy, as the milkman relies on the farmer, who relies on the mechanic to service his equipment. There are more shots of streets and buildings, including the North Chevrolet dealership (03:52) with several cars parked out front, including what appears to be a 1950 Styleline Deluxe Station Wagon. The film continues to demonstrate the interconnectedness of American communities, this time using a sick child as the focal point (04:03). The parents rely on the doctor, and the doctor relies on the pharmacist and pharmacy (04:37). The film shows further relationships, from grocery stores to the harvesting of wheat (05:11), which provide food for the pharmacist. The next shot is of a street lined with cars and businesses, such as Mars Furniture and Queen Jewelers (05:19). The film then returns to the North Chevrolet dealership, where a salesperson shows a couple a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline Aerosedan (05:37). The narrator explains how Chevrolet is there to help connect all the moving pieces of the community by selling new and used cars (07:00), as well as servicing cars at the mechanic shop (07:30) and by providing proper parts and diagnostics (08:37). The film concludes with footage of Chevrolet vehicles, including McPhails Laundry’s 1948 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery (09:08), as the narrator repeats how Chevrolet helps the American community work together.
