WINGS TO HAWAII is a promotional film produced by Hartley Productions for Pan American Airlines during the late 1950s or early 1960s. The film features a man and a woman discussing their respective trips to Hawaii while sitting in a Pan Am plane, with scenes of their adventures in Hawaii. The woman loves the family-friendly nature of Hawaii. Waikiki Beach offers beautiful views from the surf, and aerial views of the beach are just as spectacular (07:42). Surfing at Waikiki (00:24; 01:44) was one of the highlights for her boys. The man recommends a trip to Makaha (02:22) to see the big surf, where the International Surfing Championships are held, with its thirty-to-forty-foot waves. Hula lessons (08:15) are a popular activity for tourists, as is learning to do flower arrangements, taking in fashion shows, and shopping for souvenirs. The two discuss highlights of visiting other islands. On the big island of Hawaii, popular sights and activities are: deep sea fishing off the coast of Kona (04:15) and weighing the marlin (05:15); scouting for fish in a plane and taking in the aerial views of the coast, valleys, and rivers (06:21); enjoying the black sand beach at Kalapana (17:50) just south of Hilo; and visiting Hawaii National Park (14:00) with its active volcanoes (15:15). Maui also has its volcanic attractions, including views of the caldera (15:50) and lava flows (16:56) at Pu’u Naue in Haleakala National Park. Lahaina, Maui (19:32) is another highlight of the island, giving tourists the chance to observe a communal fish harvest (19:55). An authentic luau (21:10) with the kalua (traditional method of cooking a pig in an imu—and underground oven) is not to be missed. The man and woman discuss a few other events that really stuck out for them, including the Kodak show with Tahitian dancing (12:28; 12:54), Bill Irwin’s painting (18:40), a comedy hula performance (22:45), and a Samoan knife dance (23:44).
