66774 1958 ” STAY IN SCHOOL AND GRADUATE ” U.S. NAVY SPACE AGE & MISSILE AGE RECRUITING FILM (PRINT 2)

This color educational film is about the importance of graduating from high school. This film is from 1958, and features a “space age” plot surrounding a group of school kids who have a rocket club, who get to tour one of the U.S. Navy’s newest guided missile cruisers the Baltimore class USS Los Angeles(CA-135).

Opening titles: United States Navy presents “Stay in School and Graduate” (:09-:33). A car drives by the beach, stops and backs up, a teacher sees some boys in the sand dunes, walks over to see what they’re doing. The boys have a firecracker, the explosive is very dangerous. The teacher speaks to the boys, gets them to not set it off. He takes the boys over to the Naval base. Boys and girls, a class, visit a Naval base. A Petty Officer walks up the stairs and has the class follow (:34-3:23). This is the cruiser USS Los Angeles. The class walk by the gun turrets. They then look inside of them. A fire controlman shows how the gun is automatically loaded. A Navy man explains how radar works to the class, the students look in awe. A radar man at work. The class looks around the room. Engineering room. A man types, another looks in a microscope. The class walks on the stern, they see a real, Regulus guided missile. The boys look on in awe. An officer explains how the missile works. One of the boys takes an interest in speaking with an enlisted man (3:24-6:24). Navy men stare out across the Mediterranean, a picturesque canal. Visiting Greece, tall columns all around. A visit to the orient, tall statues all around. In Australia, an officer has koalas all over him. The class walks down a set of stairs, the teacher counts and is missing a student. He goes with an officer in search of him. The officer uses a phone to see if he can locate the student. Naval Base Gate 2 sign. A guard at the gate cannot locate the student. The officer calls another man with no luck. He tries other parts of the ship as well and can’t find the boy. Then a call comes in, an officer has located him and calls it in. The officer sits and talks with the boy, talks about how graduating is important, he makes the boy laugh (6:25-12:02). The class sits in a theatre watching a movie. The boy, who was missing, joins the group. The movie shows a Terrier anti-aircraft missile being fired. Then a Regulus cruise missile is fired. A Vanguard rocket takes off for outer space. The class heads for the bus and leave (12:03-13:50). End credits (13:51-13:58).
