58954 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL F.D.R. JOKES, CHICAGO POLICE UNIFORM, 1932 FASHION EPISODE #95

One of a series of historic newsreels first released by the General Newsreel Company, this episode features various segments.

First, President Franklin Roosevelt is seen on September 11, 1937 visiting Hudson River State Hospital on nurses’ graduation day in the first year of his second term as President (0:40). Here he narrates a funny story about his experiences (1:20), bursting out laughing in the faces of the nurses, and receiving a thunderous applause. At mark 2:19 a Bank for Bathers at Avenue beach Chicago (2:30) is shown. This is a bank which provide safety deposit boxes, since bathing suits aren’t made with pockets.

At mark 3:00 “Good Neighbors Settle Dispute” on the 21st of July 1922 in Washington DC. Delegates from Peru and Chile reach an agreement as America’s Secretary of state Charles Evan Hughes announces it (3:20).

At mark 3:51 is “First women in jury box” (4:00) in Orange, New Jersey 1922. Next, famed pianist Joseph Hoffman with his wife and family back in 1922 (4:20). His biography is told. Here’s Princess Fatimah cousin of emir of Afghanistan in 1921 with three sons (4:45) on visit to America wearing a family diamond worth 125,000 dollars. Onboard the ship in 1926 is Mr. and Mrs. Paul Whiteman, better known as Pops who is the king of Jazz. He has just become author of Jazz and he’s seen with his book ‘Rhapsody in blue’ (5:28). Next at (5:33) is “oil tanker Sets Ocean afire”. This happened on 30th of December, 1932. On route from Texas oil to Philadelphia the tanker and the precious cargo are on total loss (6:10). Next, “Chicago cops get new uniform”. The 1922 Chicago police are shown with their new uniforms as the officer inspects the precincts. The new uniform bettering the old one (6:42) enabling quicker enforcement of law and order (6:48).

Aviation segment: Sergeant Erwin Nichols gets his air troupers trial in 1932 at Brooks Field. This was the first demonstration of paratroops by the US Army following Nichols plan to drop manual fighting equipment behind enemy line. There was one tragic death a soldier who succumbs to heart attack, Sergeant Owen nickles (7:30) during the drop. This is history’s first appearance of the plan as they used it through years after undoing their enemies. Fashion segment: Hairdos in 1932, how women do their hairstyling (8:40). This preserves the natural hairline and bringing out the girlish looks. Also seen is photographic image of evidence of Spanish influence on the hairstyle (9:30). Finally, the sports segment. At Westbury, Long Island polo is shown with eight of the most famous polo players in competition. Four famed poloist Tommy Hitchcock, his American teammate Devereux Milburn, J. Watson Webb and Malcom Stevenson in white shirts back in 1927 battling against British in International polo match at (10:20). The Americans win the polo match with 8 – 5 victory (10:52), each cup is presented. Don and Lloyd Budge are shown at (11:13) playing tennis. Don won and at mark 12:15, the two brothers shake hands.
