58924 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL EPISODE 101 FREEDOM TRAIN ACTOR CHARLES RAY

Created from the General Newsreel Co.’s archives, YESTERDAY’S NEWSREELS was an early TV show. This episode begins with “Freedom’s Documents”, showing the 1920 display of the Declaration of Independence and other documents. The first draft of Constitution is displayed. 29 years later (1:13) in New Jersey the Freedom Train is shown in 1949. Here’s the Bill of Rights (1:33). President Lincoln’s address (1:41) with words of hope.

Next, an escape artist – the “handcuff king” the Great Leroy. He’s about to risk his life outside the street of New York so he signs wave rule responsibility (2:38). He’s handcuffed both on arms and legs and hanged on his neck. He’s to prove his claim that he’ll wiggle out of cuffs around his legs and arms while hanging by his neck six stories off the street (3:30). As New Yorkers standby in amazement, He wiggles out of the cuffs (3:50) Next, J.P. Morgan’s gems, 1921. Displays of gems and jewels given by J.P. Morgan (4:24) to American Museum of Natural History. Display of world’s rarest string of beads. Agged beads (4:40) once worn by some pretty French maiden in the 4th century are shown as well as (4:51) display of rubilites, aquamarine (5:00), a colossal star sapphire from Ceylon, (5:07) and others (5:22).

Next, on the 27th of May 1920, Irwin Cannonball Baker travels through the highways of America by car. Lights guide him through the night (5:48). On route he gets good wishes from Col. Woodson of the U.S. Army (5:55). He ends his thousand miles journey at Chicago (6:03) as he’s greeted by Major General Woods. Next, the personalities segment. Here in 1921 is Pierre Monteaux most famous of all French orchestra conductors (6:19). Pierre and his family (6:29), his lovely wife and daughter. He’s with his daughter (6:40). Biography of Peggy Wood in 1928, as she’s in costume for Shakespearean role (6:53). New York Mayor Highland meets actor Charles Ray (7:14) in 1921. Next, a mammoth fire on May 4th, 1930 as fire blaze in forest land of county New Jersey (7:45). With wind aiding the fire through the highway (8:10). An aerial view of the hectares in flames (8:25). Next segment is “Too Many Homes”, 2nd of November 1921 at a county New Jersey where houses are on auction to highest bidders (9:05). Nearly six hundreds homes on auction adding millions of dollars back to the government’s treasury.

An aviation segment is next. Test pilot Lloyd Child going for a Curtiss Hawk plane test run in dives that could tear the plane apart. He fits in his oxygen as he departs (9:45). At 22,000 ft. he goes down and down (10:03) as he goes off the chart. Next, fashions of the day. It’s March, 1926, where beauty experts open schools where would be beauty parlor experts engages in the trade (10:55).

The film ends with a sports segment. Motorcycle broad jumping (11:30) at Long Beach in California, 1919. A year later at Belgium, world’s greatest athlete competes in 1920 Olympics including the 400m hurdles (11:45). Winner Loomis from Chicago is shown (11:50), with runners up (11:56). Discus throwing (12:10), 100m race (12:15) with California’s Charlie Paddock winning the race (12:18).
