This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features ten segments of historic highlights. Albert Lebrun (:39). Lebrun is reelected as the President of France by the French National Assembly in 1936 (:44-1:36). The 14th of July, 1939, is Bastille Day, and large Paris crowds celebrate its 150th anniversary (1:37-2:22). Lebrun and his wife are shown at Windsor Castle with King George and Queen Elizabeth, before appearing in front of Britain’s legislators. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain shakes his hand (2:23-3:35). It’s a Cold Day 1925 (3:39). October 4, 1925, 7th Day Adventists in Chicago are baptized in the cold temperatures (3:45-4:25). Marines Guard U.S. Mail (4:27). 1921, United States Marines stand guard at the post office to prevent mail robbery there, from mail trucks, and when loaded on trains (4:32-5:05). 1926, the Marines guard the train postal routes (5:06-5:30). Personalities (5:33). 1920, James Beauchamp Clark, former Speaker of the House, stands by a bust of himself. (5:38-5:56). 1925, the widow of Jack London stands outside her home (5:57-6:15). 1925, a young Mickey Rooney plays Mickey McGuire (6:16-6:36). Bombs Blast Cleveland School 1922 (6:46). Two bombs planted by labor agitators completely destroy a school (6:52-7:25). Old Man on a Tight Rope 1926 (7:26). In Paris, a 70-year-old man walks a tightrope over a street multiple times (7:32-8:20). World Typing Contest 1921 (8:23). In New York City, a room full of rapidly typing typists work on typewriters and vie to win the World Typing Contest (8:29-9:15). Aviation 1929 (9:18). Louise Thaden sets the women’s endurance record with a flight of 22 hours, 3 minutes, 12 seconds in a Travel-Air plane (9:24-9:52). Fashions of the Day 1926 (9:54). May 29, 1926, President and Mrs. Coolidge attend the wedding of businessman Andrew Mellon’s daughter. Shown are the bride and her bridesmaid’s in their dresses (10:00-10:38). Sports (10:40). 1922, champion golfers Gene Sarazen and Walter Hagen compete against Jim Barnes and Jock Hutchison (10:45-11:19). 1933, the second running of the Steeplechase takes place in Grasslands, Tennessee. Shown are many falls of horses and jockeys. The winning jockey holds the Winner’s Cup (11:20-12:28).
