This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. The Fall of Poland 1939 (1:12). Civilians dig trenches in the publics parks in Poland (1:15-1:39). The troops are mobilized. On the Baltic Sea, Poland’s fleet is ready to fight (1:40-2:14). German propaganda pictures show officers plotting against Poland, followed by Nazi bombers, artillery shelling, and German troops in towns (2:15-4:26). Bird’s eye photos show Warsaw’s damage. (4:27-4:50). Poland surrenders (4:51-5:25). Pedaling on Water Early 1920s (5:28). Leander Burkhart tests his water bike invention (5:32-6:15). Personalities (6:18). 1928, oilman Harry Sinclair is absolved of fraud charges in the Teapot Dome Scandal (6:24-6:42). 1921, 87-year-old Rebecca Felton is Senator for a day in Catonsville, Georgia (6:43-7:13). 1921, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. is greeted by actress Jacqueline Logan (7:14-7:34). Britain Blizzard Early 1930s (7:45). Three days of snow has paralyzed England. Children in Wales walk 18 miles through the snow. (7:50-8:20). The spring thaw creates widespread flooding (8:21-8:33). Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium Opens May 30, 1930 (8:35). The Shedd Aquarium tenants shown include queen triggerfish, goldfish, and sea horses (8:40-9:29). Aviation 1925 (9:31). In Dayton, Ohio, Army airplane engineers purposely crash planes against walls to explore fire safety (9:36-10:30). Fashions of the Day 1926 (10:34). Cigarette girls provide cigarettes to visitors (10:35-10:47). Foreign dignitaries shown are Madame Matsudaira, wife of the Japanese ambassador (10:48), the ambassador from Egypt and his wife (10:58), the ambassador from Greece and his wife (11:09), and Austria’s Edgar Prochnik’s wife (11:17). Sports (11:25). June 17, 1922, New York hosts the final matches of the New Jersey Marble Championship, with male and female participants (11:30-12:20). At the 1936 Olympics, the four-man bobsleigh team from Germany takes a trail run down the course (12:21-13:02).
