54954 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL ROOSEVELT FAMILY FDR FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT ELEANOR ROOSEVELT #61

Episode 61 of “Yesterday’s Newsreel” provided viewers “television highlights of the news of yesteryear” by providing vintage clips of famous people and events from the first half of the 20th century. This episode opens with a look at “The Roosevelt Family” (mark 00:30), with a visit to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, and their family in 1932, and follows FDR through his 1933 inauguration (mark 01:05) and leisure time spent on the water — one of his favorite pastimes. We see the 1937 wedding of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jr. to socialite Ethel du Pont (mark 02:40) and recall the military service of Elliott Roosevelt during World War II as well as FDR Jr., who was awarded a Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart during the war. A frail FDR is shown at Yalta Conference, and at mark 04:22 we see his flag-draped casket being escorted to his final resting place. An early 1920s “Lighthouse Wedding” is revisited at mark 05:07, as are personalities from 1922 (mark 05:55) including entertainers visiting WWI veterans at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC, and actor Raymond Hitchcock. A fire that destroyed a Massachusetts lodge in 1922 is shown starting at mark 07:22, followed by an early 1920’s “Railroad Bath” at mark 08:00 — an elaborate train-washing system in Paris. Aviation circa 1923 is shown beginning at mark 08:37 with dramatic scenes of famed wing walker Ivan Unger, followed by the 1921 fashion scene (mark 10:05) and a US Navy rowing race from that same year (mark 11:07).
