54324 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL KING LEOPOLD OF BELGIUM JOSEPHUS DANIELS FIRE IN NEW YORK CITY

This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features nine segments of historic highlights. Leopold of Belgium 1926-1950. Crown Prince Leopold III waits as Princess Astrid of Sweden arrives by ship to be his bride. They wave from a balcony. Belgium mourns the accidental death of King Albert, making Leopold the new King and Astrid Queen. He rides by on horseback. The white flag of surrender flies over the official car taking King Leopold to German headquarters, where he becomes a prisoner of war. Ten year later, he meets with his former father-in-law King Gustav at the French Riviera. Leopold returns to Belgium as King. Street corner violence is shown. Leopold abdicates his thrown for his son (:54-5:03). High Society 1929. People dance on miniature skyscraper stilts in New York City. Several fall over (5:06-5:40). Young F.D. R. 1920. Navy Secretary Josephus Daniels gives a farewell present of a silver cup to his Chief Assistant, a young Franklin Delano Roosevelt. FDR resigned his position to run for Vice President (5:44-6:12). Personalities 1925. Harlan Stone, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, shakes hands with “Uncle” Joseph Cannon, Speaker of the House (6:15-6:39). England publisher Lord Beaverbrook poses with his wife and a few years later on a transatlantic trip (6:40-7:00). A baritone who sang in Pioneer talking pictures in 1928 travels by ship (7:01-7:21). Five Alarm Fire in New York City 1931. Water shoots up from fire hoses at the burning Lincoln Square Arcade building. The tenants stand outside in the snow and watch as the smoke billows from the utterly destroyed structure (7:25-8:19). “Strong Men” 1923 and 1929. Strongman Ricard Nelson bends a straight pipe into circles in Chicago. He bends a horseshoe using his teeth. He rips a thick phone book in two with his hands. He pulls a car with multiple people standing on it by his teeth (8:20-9:20). Aviation 1932. Airmen of the Army, Navy, and Marine fly above Miami at an airshow. The USS Akron (ZRS-4) flies over before her deadly disaster the following year. A plane drops out of her. Three planes tied together do loops. Parachute jumpers land holding two different parachutes. A plane crashes during a simulated air battle but the pilot safely ejects (9:24-10:50). Fashions of the Day 1918. The WAVES of 1918 march in WWI uniforms as members of the Naval Reserve (10:52-11:22). Sports 1927. Four Indians run in the New York to Long Beach marathon. Quanowahu, a Hopi Indian, beats the defending champion to win (11:25-12:00). Swimmers dive into Lake Michigan in 1928 in a swim for women. Rowboats accompany the two-mile swim, won by Isabella Smith (12:03-12:39).
