53224 1950s NIGHT DRIVING DRIVER EDUCATION FILM LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT

This 1950 black and white film is one of a series of traffic safety films. It was produced for Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company by Traffic Safety Films Inc, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Police Department. The focus of this public safety video is to encourage drivers to be aware of the dangers of driving at night both on the road and watching out for pedestrians. The film begins with an Education Unit Police Officer opening a binder titled “Night Driving” (0:09-0:33). A middle-aged man rushes out his door after dark, and trips over a vintage child’s metal bicycle lying on the ground (0:34-1:03). 1940s cars and a bus drive down an LA city street at night, with pedestrians walking on the sidewalks (1:04-1:30). Cars are next shown driving in the daylight, and the camera is filtered to simulate night driving (1:31-1:56). Cars are shown driving late at night, where effectively only the headlights are visible (1:56-2:10). The officer shows photos of night accidents and a graphic reading “3 OF EVERY 5 FATAL ACCIDENTS OCCUR AT NIGHT” (2:11-2:44). A driver is shown yawning and dozing off at the wheel at night, and nearly hits a pedestrian crossing the road, who jumps out of the way at the last moment (2:45-3:17). Night time film is shown of pedestrians walking against the neon store lights and cars driving (3:18-3:43). A driver tries to see through a dirty windshield, and stops at a gas station where a young male attendant in a white shirt and tie cleans it off (3:43-4:06). The driver wipes off his tail lights and manually rolls down his window (4:07-4:31). A good picture of the side view mirror attached to the top is seen (4:23). The Officer shows a vintage graphic of the range of headlight illumination (4:48-5:10). Car headlights are shown illuminating towards the camera coming down a road at night (5:11-5:23). Pedestrians are shown crossing the road in the dark (5:24-5:34). The film ends with the Officer talking to the camera, which fades to the training binder being closed (5:35-5:54).
