29164 WWII PILOT TRAINING FILM “THE LANDING” VULTEE BT-13 VALIANT (Takeoffs & Landings Part 2)

Take-Offs and Landings Part 2: The Landing (TF 1-3319) is a 1944 War Department training film that reviews landing procedures using a Vultee BT-13 Valiant. The film covers such topics as traffic patterns, key landing factors such as wind and drift, cross-wind landings, power landings, and reviews common errors made during landing. The film opens with an aerial shot of an airfield (00:43). Trainees share their definition of “landing” with their training officer (01:28). The officer explains the landing pattern to the trainees using a blackboard to draw the pattern; then he writes the five factors that should be considered during every landing approach. The officer explains how crosswinds impact an approach. Animated graphics are used to show how a plane reacts to some of these factors during a landing approach (09:17). A pilot flies a BT-13 (10:40) and prepares for a landing approach. The pilot demonstrates how to look around for other planes, then he turns into the base leg and decreases altitude, landing on a runway (14:01). Several other clips show BT-13s landing, including a plane approaching a runway with another plane below. The training officer shows the trainees photographs of crashed planes from unsuccessful landings while reviewing the mishaps from making common errors. A plane pulls out in front of another plane on the runway (17:55) and has to break hard, putting the ship on its nose. The officer and trainees go out to the runway to watch planes land (18:43), including a plane bouncing on its wheels as it lands. The film shows a pilot in a cockpit opening the throttle, trimming ship by reducing flaps in order to fly through a potential landing on his way to make a second landing attempt (21:35). A trainee climbs into a BT-13 (24:00); the film then shows the trainee preparing for a landing by going through the proper steps for a landing approach. He turns the plane into the base leg, watching out for another plane in his airspace. The pilot cuts throttle and goes into gliding speed, completing a three-point landing (26:55). The trainee drinks a Coke to celebrate his successful landing.
