80440 Coast Guard On Foreign Shores

The Coast Guard played an important role in the Allied victory in WWII. Coast Guardsmen manned nearly every type of support vessel for the Navy, and went into harm’s way not only in the battle against the U-boats, but at every amphibious landing from North Africa to Sicily, Italy to D-Day, Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Luzon, Okinawa and Iwo Jima. This film shows the role of the Coast Guard, and features terrific footage of many of the battles in which USCG ships and men participated. The Battle of the Atlantic sequence is especially interesting, showing how Coast Guard cutters sought out Nazi weather stations hidden in the arctic near Greenland. Convoy patrols are shown, along with the harrowing duty performed by the crews of the various landing ships on “d-days” throughout the war. Ships featured include: LST-617, LST-787, LST-795, LST-788, LST-760, patrol boat CG-83447, LCI-53, LCI-87, LCVP or Higgins Boat, USCGC Northland (49), USS Hunter Liggett (AP-27, later APA-14), as well as assault transports, cargo ships, transports, and more.
