This black and white film is one of a 1950-1960 television series Industry on Parade, produced by the National Association of Manufacturers. It contains four segments. “Kansas.” Two reporters in a 1940s station wagon arrive at a farm. They enter a late 1950s living room with tufted sofa chairs. The entry to the room has a sliding door with geometric squares on it. The woman, wearing a 1950s short-sleeve sweater and pearls, shows off her all white kitchen, with its top-opening automatic dishwasher. She takes cookies out of the oven. The men walk down a hill to the cattle grazing in the field (:37-3:32). At the Topeka headquarters for Capper Publications, an entry sign shows the various farm magazines and newspapers they own. The group meets in around a large table to discuss farm journalism story ideas. The printing presses spin into action. The paper is put into a rural mailbox (3:33-4:42). The advertisement shows handicapped workers performing industry jobs. A man wearing a suit uses his wheelchair (4:43-5:22). “Florida.” Livestock pens are shown at Miami International Airport. A horse is led up a walkway into a Dominique de Aviacion airplane (5:23-5:52). Various sizes and shapes of cargo are weighed and moved by forklift at the airport. Window frames are loaded into the back of an elevator truck at the Riddle Airlines Cargo Receiving station. A forklift loads a large stack of flattened corrugated cardboard boxes into the airplane (XH-TNB). The Riddle elevator truck lifts its cargo. The window frames are hand-loaded into the Riddle airplane (5:53-7:14). Pan Am Airlines Clipper Archer (N88898) has a ramp that allows the forklifts to roll into the plane with its cargo (7:15-7:35). Cargo being loaded includes lettuce, cut flowers, live baby chicks from Kauder’s, General Electric refrigerators, Seeburg Select-o-matic record players, and Dormeyer drink-mixers. The plane takes off (7:36-8:32). “New York.” An executive dictates to his secretary. He wears eyeglasses that incorporate a hearing aid, manufactured by Aryan Inc. at Dobbs Ferry. Women wearing 1950s hairstyles, blouses, and pearls work under lights to manufacture the product. They solder components into the frames. A woman with a 1950s pixie haircut takes a hearing test. The test giver uses a machine with a record to provide various sounds. Her new combination hearing aid cat-eye glasses have gems across the front (8:33-10:58). “Illinois.” Three young men in suits and ties sit down at a diner and order pancakes from the waitress. A cook wearing an apron and white hat uses the Quaker Oats Aunt Jemima Pancake machine. He pours prepackaged Ready Mix ingredients into a metal cup and attaches it to the machine. The mixed batter is poured onto the griddle and the finished pancakes plated and served, all within three minutes. One pours syrup on his out of a white pitcher before eating (10:59-13:23).
