The Junior College Story: California’s Community Colleges is a short educational film about the foundation of California’s junior colleges, who can take classes at the institutions, and covers the various types of training provided. The film opens with a shot of cars driving through a redwood forest (00:39), scenes from Yosemite National Park, the Golden Gate Bridge (01:48), and the State Capitol Building in Sacramento (02:10). The State Board of Education holds a meeting (02:30). The film shows the relevant pages on education found in the Constitution of the State of California. Old photographs show some of the first junior colleges, including the very first one in Fresno. The film then shows footage of various junior college campuses around the state. Junior college students study mechanical engineering, art, and botany (05:22). A student fills out a form at an admissions office window (07:30). Students study in a library. An instructor teaches math to students in a classroom. Students work on repairing electric devices in the classroom. The film also shows students training to be metallurgy technicians, students working in a mechanical shop (11:22), and women learning shorthand in a classroom. Two men study how an office machine functions. Nurses graduate from their two-year training program. Men and women study cosmetology and practice styling hair. A Citizens Advisory Committee meets with members of a junior college’s administration (16:19). A woman feeds fish in an observation tank in a classroom. Students make jewelry and sculptures in an art class. At a pool, students practice diving (20:17); other students practice archery at an archery range. The film concludes with more shots of California’s junior college campuses.
